My name is Alan Mattli, and ever since I founded Facing the Bitter Truth in 2008 as a tenth-grader, I've been working as a freelance film journalist, regularly publishing reviews and articles on (primarily) current releases.

Between 2011 and 2015, I contributed weekly reviews to the Lucerne newspaper Die Heimat (also known as Die Region). During roughly the same period – from 2013 to 2016 – I was a staff writer at the Lucerne-based culture and lifestyle magazine ZIN mag, where I wrote short articles on regional, national, and international goings-on in the world of cinema. Furthermore, my writing was also published in the Frame film magazine until its discontinuation in late 2019. This also led to a number of bylines in the NZZ am Sonntag, Frame's parent publication. In addition, I was a regular contributor to and one-time editor-in-chief of The Zurich English Student, the online student publication of the University of Zurich's English department.

At the moment, my texts primarily appear on this blog, the online film and TV reviewing platform Maximum Cinema, and the ten-language culture section of Swissinfo. To a lesser extent, I am also published in the online and print versions of the Swiss CINEMA almanac. In addition, I am part of the core team of the Swiss-German Maximum Cinema Filmpodcast.

I am also available on request for film introductions for special screenings, and as a Q&A moderator for cinema screenings with filmmakers and actors in attendance. I also offer film readings and introductions to film analysis (in English and German) for secondary schools. All rates are by arrangement. You can contact me here.

Apart from my freelancing as a film critic, I was a student at the University of Zurich from 2010 to 2016, where I graduated with a Master's degree in English Literature and Linguistics and Film Studies. In 2017, I started my doctoral thesis in English Literature, focusing on revisionist American detective literature in the latter half of the 20th century. In the summer of 2023, I successfully completed my PhD. Since August 2018, I've been employed as a research and teaching assistant at the English Seminar of the University of Zurich.
